God’s Word is Forever!

“The grass withers, the flower fades, but the word of our God will stand forever.” Isaiah 40:8

As I sit and ponder how to even write about this promise I am a little intimidated. Okay, maybe a lot intimidated. The verse says it all. The word of God has stood the test of time already. It’s been translated and handed down for centuries. There have been people who have tried to destroy it and failed. I read about a couple.

There was a Roman Emperor in 303 A.D. who demanded that all copies of scripture be burned. Yet 25 years later another Roman Emperor used government funds to prepare more copies. There was a French guy named Voltaire, he died in 1778 he believed that in 100 years of his lifetime that Christianity would be nonexistent and that the Bible would be forgotten. Fifty years after his death the Geneva Bible Society used his press and his house to produce Bibles. There have been people through the ages who have tried to say this book is not relevant and it’s outdated yet here it stands just like Isaiah said.

Peter made reference to this scripture in 1 Peter when he was calling on christians to love each other with a pure heart.

“Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for ‘All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.’” 1 Peter 1:22-25

Peter is calling us to a sincere brotherly love since we are Christians. We have the tried, tested, true word of God to stand on. God’s word does not die! We live in a culture that wants to cancel history, wants to cancel people who disagree with them and wants to cancel ideas that are not in line with their own. But we can be assured that this idea of cancelling will never be able to cancel God’s word. His word says it and reiterates it. The Word of the Lord stands forever!

I know even today I have sat in many circles where we want to shake our heads and talk about what a sad time we live in. And I am not disputing that things have seemed to go a little crazy over the past couple of years and yes there are a lot of things going on in our world that are downright sad. But we, as Christians can stand firmly on the promise that God’s word stands. It has stood the test of time in the past and it will continue to stand forever!

You know I have often heard it said and I’ve often said it myself, if you don’t like the way things are just hold on, the one thing in life you can be sure of is change. I don’t always embrace change personally. Therefore I am glad that that is not the case with God and His word! Knowing God and knowing His word is the solid rock that I stand on gives me a peace and security that this world and the circumstances in my world can’t give me. His word stands forever!

Seasons will come and go. Circumstances will come and go. People will come and go. Life is ever changing and ever involving. Presidents and rulers and ideas will come and go. But we as Christians can stand firmly on the promise that the word of our God will stand forever!!!
